Satire and history blend in director Urs Odermatt's adaptation of playwright's George Tabori's imaginative and controversial retelling of Adolf Hitler's early life as a young man desperate to be admitted to art school. In pre-World War I Vienna, Hitler (Tom Schilling) is befriended by elderly Jew Schlomo Herzl (Götz George), who takes the starving artist under his wing and encourages him to enter politics.
