Vivien Leigh, Simone Signoret, Jose Ferrer and Lee Marvin give riveting performances in this Stanley Kramer film adaptation of Katherine Anne Porter's 1962 novel. The compelling story recounts the voyage of a German ship from Mexico to Bremerhaven, Germany, prior to World War II; it's a stormy journey fraught with anti-semitism, unrequited love, xenophobia and dissatisfied lives. The film was Vivien Leigh's final screen appearance.
